One more cruise ship will visit Campbell River this year.
"It's a pocket cruiser out of Cruise West Cruise Lines," said Terri Henderson, shore program assistant with the Campbell River Indian Band's Wei Wai Kum cruise ship terminal.
The Spirit of Columbia will stop in Campbell River Saturday morning. The ship will stay from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Henderson said the ship will offer its passengers their choice of Campbell River adventures.
"They've chosen three packages from our catalog," she said, adding the ship will offer passengers the choice of kayaking in the estuary; hiking to Elk Falls; or taking part in a potlatch ceremony and a visit to the Campbell River museum.
The 143-foot ship is small, carrying between 90-110 passengers plus crew. Henderson said the ship has been chartered by a company and when it visits Campbell River, it will have about 45 people on board. However, she expects most of them will get off the boat and explore Campbell River in shoreline excursions, or on their own.
"We don't care what size the ships are, we just want them to stop here and for the passengers to have a good time," said Mary Ashley, chair of the Port of Call Committee. "We want to make them feel welcome."
The Port of Call Committee meets Wednesday and Ashley said it will do whatever it can to help the band prepare for the ship's visit Saturday morning.
Henderson said the ship's visit is a trial run, meaning that if Cruise West likes Campbell River, they could come back in 2009-2010 with some of their bigger ships.
The Seattle-based company's guest programs manager visited Campbell River about a year ago and has been trying since to get the city on the cruise line's schedule.
