No happy new year for Super Valu employees
The Campbell River Super Valu will close its doors Dec. 31.
Thirty-five employees will be out of work when Super Valu closes on Dec. 31, and long-time customers will be going elsewhere to do their shopping in the new year.
“That’s disappointing. They have the best bread in one town,” says one shopper, as she heads to the bakery.
The Super Valu grocery store at the Tyee Plaza is a Loblaws franchise which also operates the Great Canadian Superstore located at Discovery Harbour Mall.
Super Valu franchise owner Dave Chilton received the news that Loblaws no longer wanted to operate out of the Tyee Plaza location and gave employees their layoff notices earlier this week.
“It’s both sad and disappointing, but all a part of business,” he said. “Customers have talked to me over the last two days and they’re dismayed by the news.”
Competition for grocery business has increased over the last decade in Campbell River and a new Wal-Mart store is due to open in the new year.
Despite the increased competition, Chilton said business has been steady and they will continue to serve customers until closing day.
“Business has been good considering the economy of the community,” he said. “It will be business as usual until Dec. 31.”
