National Child Day in Campbell River
Celebrate children on Tuesday, Nov. 20, as Campbell River joins the rest of Canada in marking National Child Day.
Kathy Rae and Joyce McMann, the leaders at Family Place Drop In, are pleased to be a part of this annual celebration. As early childhood educators, they are committed to improving quality of life for children.
“National Child Day is all about the rights of children and the importance of families,” offers Rae, who has been actively organizing the event with a number of other community agencies.
Nov. 20 was designated as National Child Day in 1993 to commemorate the adoption of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child (1959) and the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989). The Convention of the Rights of the Child addresses the rights of children and youth under the age of 18. It recognizes their basic human rights and gives them additional rights to protect them from harm. The Convention also recognizes the important role of the family in bringing up children.
This year the National Child Day celebration in Campbell River will include a terrific selection of free activities for big kids, little kids and their families. Campbell River Community Centre activities will be held between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The morning will feature Family Place Drop In, make and take craft, story time, family gym and more. In the afternoon, the Fire Department will be onsite with firefighters and a fire truck. For more information contact, Linda Kubinec at 250-286-1161.
