Police overkill put damper on event
On Tuesday morning my wife, myself and approximately 400 other residents of the Bowser area gathered near the Bowser Legion to watch the Olympic Torch Run. It was a pleasant morning to watch this event with the exception of the police presence.
Before the torch arrived we were treated to the presence of police cruisers and motorcycle officers cruising back and forth doing God knows what; looking for terrorists or protesters?
When the time for the torch’s arrival finally came we had several sponsors trucks come through and a media motor home along with van after van carrying RCMP officers. By my estimate there were in excess of 30 uniformed officers in the area and who knows how many undercover officers.
When the torch carrier finally went by it was almost a letdown due to the overwhelming police presence.
I know why we are paying so much for these Olympics. If this is the security bill for passing through Bowser one can only wonder what’s in store when the torch passes through Toronto or Montreal!
In spite of this, congratulations to the locals who organized our local participation in the Olympics.
