The person whose body was found in an overturned SUV in Cameron Lake on the weekend has been identified.

Oceanside RCMP Sergeant Darrell Robertson said the female victim has been identified as 37-year-old Campbell River resident Tara Burns.

The 1995 black Jeep Cherokee Burns was driving was discovered upside down by passersby in about two metres of water Sunday afternoon.

Robertson said Central Island Traffic Services and the Oceanside RCMP are continuing their investigation into the cause of the incident, with investigators continuing to focus on the factors that may have caused the crash.

There was no word yet from the B.C. Coroner’s Service on exactly how long the vehicle may have been in the water before it was discovered.

Robertson noted police have found no indication that alcohol consumption played a role in the tragedy.

Any witnesses to this incident who have not yet spoken to police are asked to contact the Oceanside RCMP at 250-248-6111.
