NANAIMO — Two of the men accused of a series of bank robberies appeared in court recently, with one being sentenced to time behind bars.

Benjamin Schooner, 19 and Jordan Mercer, 18, made an appearance on Sept. 30, while co-accused Michael McElree — who had earlier pleaded guilty to charges of robbery and possession of stolen goods — remained in custody awaiting a pre-sentence report on Nov. 4.

The three were arrested near Courtenay on Aug. 17 after they allegedly stole a car and robbed three banks, two of them in Parksville.

Mercer, who was in court for an interim release application, was remanded in custody and will return to court on Oct. 20 for a bail hearing.

Schooner, who was in court for the same reason, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years in prison and a 15-year firearms prohibition.
