Oceanside non-profit organizations got a financial boost this week from their involvement in this summer’s Beach Fest.
The local groups apply to be goodwill ambassadors for the Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition every year and volunteers from the groups staff the gates and greet visitors throughout the three week event.
Volunteers co-ordinator Joan LeMoine pointed out this is a huge commitment of time from the individuals and groups, without which the festival would not be possible.
In exchange for their volunteer time the organizations share the proceeds from the donations collected at the gate. In some cases this is the organizations’ largest fundraiser for the year.
This year over $28,400 was split among the nine groups, who then use the money for various projects and the good work they are doing throughout the community.
This year’s groups were the Parksville Lawn Bowling Club, Oceanside Hospice Society, Parksville Curling Club, Preceptor Delta Zeta, Ladies Auxiliary Royal Canadian Legion branch #49, Arrowsmith Search and Rescue, Parksville/Qualicum Shrine Club, Parksville Elks Club and Xi Delta Pi.
