Drivers in Qualicum Beach have adjusted well to the new roundabout at Memorial Avenue and Rupert Road, says Mark Brown.
The Town of Qualicum Beach chief administrative officer said opinions about the project appear to have improved since the roundabout opened for traffic two weeks ago.
“Staff has been getting lots of positive comments. It was about 50-50 when we were talking about it, but it has been very positive since it opened.”
Brown stressed using the roundabout is something new, which requires getting used to.
“It’s a learning process. We are giving out information in the newspaper, brochures and in the Noteworthy about how to signal and how to yield. However, so far, it’s working quite nicely.”
Mayor Teunis Westbroek agreed.
“So far, the feedback is very positive,” he said. “I’ve even had some people approach me and say we need more of them where there are speed issues and left turn issues.”
Even those who are too young to drive have expressed their appreciation.
“I went to Arrowview School and talked to a Grade 4 class asked the students what they think about the roundabout and they said they think it’s great. They said it’s cool go around and one said his mom went around it twice. They also like that there’s a separate bike path and crosswalks.”
Westbroek said the improved crosswalks will help to avoid potentially dangerous situations.
“I’ve seen many seniors crossing there before and I saw some very close calls,” he said, calling for residents to take it easy while they get used to it.
“It will take time to adjust,” he said. “It’s a change and we are asking for people’s patience and road courtesy.
