A family of around six people are homeless after a Monday morning fire destroyed their home on Turner Road in Parksville.
Owner of the rental property, Mike Moad, said he saw a plume of smoke after hearing the smashing of glass and walking up the driveway to investigate. The breaking glass was neighbour Adam Morely, who told The News he was saving two cats trapped inside.
None of the family members was home at the time, said Moad.
The fire started at around 8:30 a.m. and firefighters arrived to a house fully in flames. All they could do was knock down the fire and ensure the blaze ddn’t spread into nearby bush and other homes.
Members of the family and thier pets were taken to Morley’s house nearby, yet were clearly distraught at losing thier home.
Moad said he has insurance, but the house, built in the 1960s, is non-conforming to current city bylaws and zoning, meaning he won’t be able to replace it.
