Be aware of the risks and plan ahead
Disaster can strike at any time and without warning.
It’s a fact the Regional District of Nanaimo recognizes and the impetus behind Emergency Preparedness Week, May 4-10.
“Many people do not worry about emergency preparedness until disaster strikes,” said Lou Biggeman, electoral Area F director. “People should be aware of the risks that may affect their community and know what to do in the event an emergency.”
The Regional District of Nanaimo is currently investigating the earthquake readiness of fire halls across the region, with potential upgrades planned to address any deficiencies discovered during recent seismic reviews.
To learn what the risks are in your neighborhood, visit the emergency planning section of the RDN’s site, www.rdn.bc.ca to view the hazard vulnerability risk analysis, or look through the community wildfire protection plans that provide important information about fire hazard and ratings in the RDN.
Also recommended is for families and individuals to set aside some time preparing an emergency preparedness kit that could save hardship and danger during the all important hours after disaster strikes when emergency personnel will not be able to reach everyone immediately.
