Recruits include Sparky the Fire Dog

New recruit Sparky the Fire Dog plays dodgeball with a student at Arrowview school.

The Qualicum Beach Volunteer Fire Department is back up to a full staff, thanks to a recruiting drive this month, says chief Darryl Kohse.

That’s not surprising for a fire hall that often finds itself keeping track of a waiting list, rather than begging for new recruits.

“We had a waiting list but we lost a few people to other career choices and moving on,” Kohse said. “We’ve been going through the process for about a month and a half and we did an information session about two weeks ago and we brought on seven, so our roster is back up to what it was.”

One other recent recruit, he added, has been doing yeoman’s duty for the fire hall since coming on staff. Sparky the Fire Dog, he said, has toured local schools and appeared at several community events, in order to push the issue of fire safety.

“He was like a magnet,” he said.
