Close to 600 classic and suped-up cars, trucks and motorcycles will fill the Parksville waterfront Sunday in the annual Oceanside Overdrive Car Club’s show and shine.

Co-ordinator Peter Morrison, a club member, said as a result of increased publicity and advertising of the event, they are expecting to eaily outpace last year’s turnout of nearly 500 vehicles.

“We have been getting calls from all over the Pacific Northwest,” he said, noting inquires about the show have come in from Washington State, Alberta, the Fraser Valley, Victoria and of course, Vancouver Island.

“We will have tons of local car enthusiasts,” he said. “There seems to be a lot more of them around here these days.”This Saturday, Morrison said car owners will take part in a cruise, starting at 6 p.m. (Please note this is the correct start time), from the A&W and end in the Community Park to coincide with the showing of Grease on a three-storey movie screen.

That’s the Cinema Under the Stars event on Aug. 1. That show begins after the cruise and at dusk. The outdoor movie is being presented by Alliance West Sports & Entertainment and Thrifty Foods. Entry is by donation, with proceeds going to Parksville Rotary.

Sunday’s car show starts at 10 a.m. and runs to 3:30 p.m. Entry is free and there will be plenty of vendors in the park — including Serious Coffee, Thrifty Foods, Lordco and Boston Pizza, to name but a few. Parksville Taekwondo will handle the parking in the park and they are taking donations as well.

Morrison said there are 80 trophies and plenty of prizes for the vehicle entries.
