Parksville's log church to mark 115th year with flowers

To celebrate its 115th anniversary, Parksville's log church will be filled with flowers.
St. Anne's Anglican Church parishioner and volunteer Pat Nicoll said they have put the call out for flowers for a special show in the historic place of worship. Organizers are asking people to bring flowers — in most any kind of container they can imagine — from their own gardens or from florists and put them on display in the church on Sat., July 25, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. — the day before the church's official 115th anniversary of being consecrated.
Nicoll said the idea came from her own experiences at flower festivals in Alberta and from another parishioner's travels in England.
Not only will the church rows be filled with flowers, Nicoll is encouraging the families or friends of the many people interred in the neighbouring cemetery to mark the grave sites.
"The idea is to fill the church full of flowers," Nicoll said, "and to mark all the graves."
With close to 700 burials, she is seeking out as many family and friends as possible to add a splash of colour to the property.
"Any place we can put a container, we will. My dream is to have 100 people come and have to work to find a place to put all the flowers."
The same day, the church will host a Victorian-era tea from 2 to 4 p.m., with servers dressed in period costume. That will be held in the St. Edmund's hall — in the larger church next door to St. Anne's.
The parish will also hand out its annual bursary to an adult member who is seeking further education. Nicoll said the fund was created on the occasion of St. Anne's 100th anniversary, yet this year will probably be the last time it's awarded, as the money is running out.
In past years, the parish has marked the anniversary with grave site tours. The graveyard is the final resting place of many Parksvile pioneers. This year, the tours have been cancelled in favour of the flower show. Once complete, unclaimed flowers will be given to area seniors' homes and care facilities to help brighten someone's day.

Services are still held in the 115-year-old log church, three Sundays each month between Easter and November.
