It's significance is not lost on organizers of the Olympic Torch Relay and on Saturday the Inukshuk outside The Old School House arts centre in Qualicum Beach was formally recognized with the dedication of a plaque identifying its creators.
The representation of what has become an iconic Canadian symbol was built and installed in 2003 by renowned painter of Arctic landscapes, and now a Bowser resident, Ken Kirkby with help from friends Ken Harris and Earl Wiegand.
TOSH arts co-ordinator, Corinne James, said the statue caught the eye of the National Olympic Torch Committee who subsequently insisted that the runner carrying the torch during local celebrations on Nov. 2 pass by the Inukshuk rather than down Second Avenue, considered the likeliest choice for the torch route.
