Nanaimo sports fans can ensure that their favourite athletes and teams will be sporting big smiles in February.

The Nanaimo Sport Achievement Awards are set for Feb. 6 at the Coast Bastion Inn.

Organizers held a press conference at the hotel Wednesday to officially open the nomination period.

Proceeds from the awards banquet will go to the Coast Hotels Athlete Assistance Program, which will direct funds to gymnast Trevor Nagy, cross-country skier Andrea Lee and curler Darah Provencal. The three local Olympic hopefuls all enjoyed great success in 2009.

“These guys are full of surprises and we’ve got to stay on our toes to keep on top of their accomplishments,” said Drew Cooper, general manager of PacificSport’s Vancouver Island regional sport centre.

Anyone is welcome to submit nominations for the following awards: Individual Athlete of the Year, Team Athlete of the Year, Masters Athlete of the Year, Junior Athlete of the Year, Partners of the Year, Team of the Year, Junior Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Official of the Year, Sport Administrator of the Year and Sports News Story of the Year.

Nomination forms are available online at www.pacificsport.com and can also be picked up at the hotel and ad the PacificSport office at Vancouver Island University.
