Nanaimo Skating Club figure skaters put forth some strong routines at regionals last month.

The club members garnered a handful of medals at Skate Canada B.C./Yukon’s Vancouver Island Region Championships at the Nanaimo Ice Centre Oct. 23-25.

A club press release noted that some of the competitive divisions were extremely tight, with only a few points separating the top finishers.

“The highlight of the weekend’s competition were the incredible skates of our competitive stream skaters who will be off to the provincial championships in Richmond in [two] weeks,” the release noted.

Ashley Thorup was second in the pre-novice ladies’ division, while Mei Pond claimed third in the pre-juvenile ladies’ division.

Lucas Pallard finished first in the junior bronze men’s category, while Caroline Cecil took second in the junior bronze ladies’ division. In Canskate competition, Alyssa MacDonald was first, Einar Nicholson and Maxine Barlow were second and Kate Cameron took third. Laurel Fauth claimed second place in her interpretive division.

Another highlight of regionals was an exhibition routine from the juvenile pairs team of Pallard and Kanon Gardner – the duo thrilled the crowd on the last morning of competition with a flawless skate.
