The North Island Silvertips are still managing to surprise teams around the B.C. Major Midget League.

Nanaimo’s top boys’ minor hockey team (6-4-0) pulled off another upset Saturday, defeating the Cariboo Cougars (8-4-0) 3-0 at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.

The ’Tips jumped out to a 1-0 lead in that one thanks to Evan Richardson’s first-period marker, whle Lee Orpen and Josh Cronan added insurance goals in the third. The Silvertips fired 55 shots at Cariboo’s goalie while receiving a shutout performance from their own goalie, Sean Maguire.

The Cougars won Sunday’s rematch 4-3.

The North Island boys head down the Malahat this coming weekend to take on the South Island Thunderbirds Saturday (Oct. 31) and Sunday.

The ’Tips won’t return to the NIC until Nov. 21-22 against Fraser Valley.

Costco Clippers tie neighbours

The Nanaimo Costco Clippers midget Tier 2 boys’ hockey team wasn’t able to settle its differences with Oceanside on the weekend. The squads skated to a 3-3 tie Saturday in Parksville.

The previous weekend, the Costco Clippers midgets earned a 4-1 win over Kerry Park at Mill Bay Oct. 17 and played the Peninsula Eagles to a 2-2 draw the next day at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.
