Last year, the VIU Mariners hosted soccer provincials but didn’t qualify. This year, the M’s are medal favourites.

VIU’s men’s and women’s soccer teams are on the Lower Mainland this Friday (Oct. 23) for the start of the B.C. Colleges’ Athletic Association championships.

The men snagged first place in the league and a first-round bye, so they can watch Friday and wait for their Saturday opponent to be determined.

Whoever emerges, said all-star Ben Leggett, can be beat, so long as the M’s stick to what worked in the regular season.

“It’s a whole team effort,” he said. “Our goalie, we have eight shutouts in 11 games, our defensive line’s pretty good but our whole team’s solid, even the guys on the bench.”

The VIU women must qualify for Saturday’s semifinals by beating Kwantlen Friday.
