Junior A Timbermen overwhelmed, eliminated from playoffs

The Nanaimo Timbermen didn’t have enough firepower or manpower to be competitive in the playoffs.
The city’s B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League team fizzled out of the first round Sunday after losing to the New Westminster Salmonbellies by a 17-5 score in Game 2 at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. The previous night on the mainland, New West won 20-6.
The T-men had some key defenders playing through injuries and the ’Bellies were able to steadily pull away in both games.
“We knew exactly how to defend them, we just didn’t have the bodies to do it,” said Tyson Leies, coach of the Timbermen. “We’re not making excuses. They were a bigger and stronger club and I thought we had the talent to match up with them.”
Game 2 was actually close most of the way through, as the score was 3-3 after one period and 5-3 after two.
“Everyone wanted it so bad and we just ran out of gas at the end,” said Jon Diplock, who scored two goals and assisted on two more. “We could have had it but it slipped through our fingers … physically, mentally we were there for the whole game until the last 10 minutes. It’s just a shame.”
Other scorers Sunday were Ryan Forslund, Steve Higgs and Cody Bremner. In Saturday’s loss, Kyle Hofer scored twice and Diplock, Todd Whittaker, Bremner and Mitch McLaren had the others. Scott Bannister was the goalie of record in both defeats.
Eight different T-men players received fighting majors during the series.
