Nanaimo Clippers try to halt Express

This time, the Nanaimo Clippers plan to be the ones on the fast track.

The city’s B.C. Hockey League team hosts two games this weekend, both against the Burnaby Express.

In the last meeting between the squads Saturday on the mainland, the Express brought the most energy and eventually prevailed 4-3 in double overtime.

“They were winning the footraces and playing really physical and just trying to throw you off your game and they managed to do that,” said Kurtis Bartliff, Clippers rookie.

“The best way [to combat that] would be just to work hard, not let them get to you and go out there and play your own game, not play theirs.”

Justin Favreau, an alternate captain on the Clippers, said his team can play physical, too, but can also use its foot speed against the Express.

Favreau said he wants to see the Clippers “keep our head up, make smart plays and make the puck do the work, not the body.

“If you’re moving it around and they’re trying to hit you and they can’t catch you, then we should be doing all right.”

He said the defensive zone play was good against Burnaby, but said there’s always room to tighten up.
