NDSS, Barsby clash in Classic

On Friday (Oct. 10), the Barsby Bulldogs and Nanaimo District Islanders will bash helmets.

On Saturday, two of the coaches will break bread at Thanksgiving dinner, as Barsby coach Rob Stevenson and his brother, NDSS assistant coach Nate Stevenson, will share some family time.

“One guy’s going to be pouting,” Rob said. “[But] usually one of Mom’s turkey dinners takes all the angst out of life for awhile.”

Nate said he hopes to see Rob throw his hat and clipboard on the ground in frustration Friday. And of course, he wants to see NDSS retain the Kocher Classic trophy.

“[The Bulldogs] want that trophy back, they consider it theirs,” Nate said.

“But by golly, we’re going to dance with them on Friday and see who gets to keep it for another year.”

The Islanders won last year’s Kocher Classic 18-12, their first-ever win over the ’Dawgs.

“Barsby has a bad taste in its mouth from last year that hasn’t gone away,” said Rob. “It’s going to be no holds barred. We’re getting after them as hard as we can, within the rules.”

Friday’s kickoff is slated for 1:45 p.m. at John Barsby Secondary School field.
