Relay start of something great
The Olympic torch relay celebrations kicks off an opportunity for Canada to put on the best Olympic Games ever and to show the world what a wonderful country we live in, writer says.
To the Editor,
On Halloween night in downtown Nanaimo we watched the 2010 Winter Olympic Games torch relay.
How fortunate we were to be able to park on Commercial Street, right where Runner 150 handed the flame off to Runner 151.
It was such an amazing time – the air was electric with emotion and excitement – it took everything I had not to start singing O Canada.
We got to shake hands with each runner and even hold the torch for a few seconds. The RCMP did a terrific job, everything was organized and handled extremely well.
This torch relay is the start of something historic and great – the world will be coming to Canada.
And while most visitors will be spending time in Vancouver and Whistler, many will try to lengthen their stay to see as much as they can of our wonderful country.
Wouldn’t it be great if we could focus on making everyone feel welcome?
The venues are built, the money has been spent and there is no going back now.
To all those who have protested, could we maybe put it away for now?
If the Games are a bomb, you will have every opportunity afterward for an ‘I told you so.’
For now, let this relay unite us as proud Canadians. Whether you watch the Games live, on TV, or not at all, let us show the world what a wonderful country we live in and what gracious hosts we are.
It’s game on, Canada.
My hope is that 2010 will go down in history as the best Olympics ever.
