Nanaimo's first significant snowfall of the season caused carnage on the streets Monday.

Const. Gary O'Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said 13 motor vehicle accidents happened in the city limits within one hour.

Snow started falling in late afternoon. By 5 p.m. emergency crews were scrambling to various crash sites across the city as evening rush hour traffic picked up.

"It culminated with a bus crashing into a Chrysler Neon at the Departure Bay and Randle roads intersection," O'Brien.

The driver of the car suffered minor injuries, but none of the passengers on the bus nor its driver were injured.

Most accidents involved cars turning at intersections.

O'Brien said road conditions were the primary factor in all of the crashes, no one was seriously injured and few if any of the drivers involved would be charged.
