Bill Holdom – A-

It would be easy to forgive veteran councillor Bill Holdom if he let up somewhat on his civic duties. Over the past few years he has worked tirelessly and often thanklessly establishing the Official Community Plan. Instead, Holdom keeps on trucking, often considering angles in open debate that nobody else has considered and speaking strongly and eloquently on issues that demand important consideration.

Holdom put forward key motions that included using reserve funds for RCMP cell upgrades, led the way for better industrial land strategies, has valuable insight in budget deliberations, helped improve euthanasia methods of cats at the city pound and is a proponent for increased population density downtown.

One of his few missteps included a comment that it was acceptable for Nanaimo residents to be forced to walk on roads, not sidewalks, after heavy snowfalls. In another head scratcher, in September he called for a moratorium on building new roads in Nanaimo for five years, citing vehicle emissions as the reason. In November he then enthusiastically backed the proposed Sandstone development, which will likely contribute to traffic congestion in the south end.

We’ll chalk those up to fatigue.

Holdom also voted in favour of signing a one-year deal with Millennium Developments last winter regarding the convention centre hotel, recognizing it was an advantageous situation for the city.
