Inbrief Compost fire calls result in fines
Organic waste at International Composting Corporation’s headquarters is getting so hot, the company has started receiving fines from the city.
Rick Kwasnecha, fire investigator with Nanaimo Fire Rescue, said the department is charging ICC $200 every time fire crews have to put out a fire in one of the compost piles.
Decomposing organic materials can provide the oxygen and fuel to start a fire without need of an external ignition source.
Fire crews were at the Maughan Road property on Thursday and Friday mornings this week to put out fires.
Kwasnecha said the department gets called to the property regularly and is now are charging the company $200 for each visit, because the company is violating an order to fix the problem.
He said although workers spray the composting piles with water during the day, there is no overnight shift so the piles are able to get hot enough to start a fire.
