Three phases over the next five years could result in a few more off-leash areas for dogs in Nanaimo.
Jeff Ritchie, senior manager for parks, said more than 100 people showed up for an open house to provide input on where off-leash areas should be located and what kinds of amenities they might have.
At least 200 people attended the first open house in the summer.
“This latest open house addressed more specific details rather than general locations and features,” Ritchie said. “Now we’re talking about areas that may need to be fenced and other infrastructure.”
Locations still on the table include Diver Lake Park, Colliery Dam Park, Beaufort Park, Nanaimo Ice Centre, Northfield rest area and an expanded site at Beban Park.
Currently there are three off-leash areas in Nanaimo, including Beban Park, Cable Bay and under the powerlines at Westwood Lake.
Ritchie estimates four to five new parks over the next few years, beginning with three “easy to implement” choices that could open in early 2010 as Phase 1 of the project.
Phase 2, which would take about a year, would involve parks that require fencing or structures, and Phase 3 would consist of parks that could face some public opposition or require additional review.
Ritchie said a working group will be created to work with the parks, recreation and culture commission after further public consultations.
