Island loses Condé Nast top spot

South Carolina has knocked Vancouver Island out of the top spot for North America’s Best Island category in this year’s Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards.
Award results were released by Condé Nast Traveler Magazine and Tourism Vancouver Island Tuesday, showing the Island slipped to second place – by just 1.7 points – behind Kiawah Island, S.C.
The Island held the top spot for nine consecutive years.
The Gulf Islands also made the No. 6 spot in the Top 10 Islands in North America, while Victoria ranked fourth in the Top Cities of The Americas category.
Several properties from the Vancouver Island region also made the Readers Choice list.
Among the 30 top Canadian Hotels are Victoria’s Fairmont Empress at 11th place, the Aerie Resort & Spa, 12th; the Hotel Grand Pacific, 18th; Hastings House Country House Hotel, 20th; Victoria Regent Hotel, 20th; the Magnolia Hotel & Spa, 22nd; and Sooke Harbour House, 29th.
In the Top Canadian Resorts, Tofino’s Wickaninnish Inn and Long Beach Lodge took third and fourth spots respectively, with the Westin Bear Mountain Golf Resort & Spa coming in at No. 20.
