Nanaimo RCMP are crediting police dog Lar and his handler, Cpl. Dean Muir, with saving the life of a 45-year-old Nanaimo woman.

Police said the woman went missing Sunday evening after quad riding in the Doumont Road area.

She was with two men who called police after she wandered off, did not answer their calls and their search failed to locate her.

Police were told the woman was not dressed for the weather and that she had been drinking.

They called out search and rescue crews and a police dog team.

Lar lead Mounties through some extremely dense bush to the woman, who was found partially clothed and disoriented.

She was taken to hospital to be treated for mild hypothermia and minor cuts and bruises. She was kept overnight for observation.

“As to how she ended up in the woods in a partially clothed state is subject to an investigation,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.
