Nanaimo robbery attempt goes wrong

Mounties nabbed a suspect who provided an unusual explanation for a robbery attempt early Tuesday.
It happened at 12:30 a.m. when a man walked into the Domino's Pizza restaurant on Bowen Road and told the manager to hand over the money from the till. He threatened to pull out a knife if his demands weren't met.
The manager told the suspect he could not access the till and yelled to an employee to call 911.
When the robbery did not go as planned, the suspect left without the cash. An employee got in his car and followed the would-be robber to a nearby intersection where he was arrested.
Mounties said the suspect told officers he was scared to commit the crime so he drank enough liquor to build up his courage, which apparently faltered when he was challenged by the manager.
He then described himself to the arresting officers as "just an old fashioned guy who needed money to take some girls out on a date and pay for dinner and drinks," according to an RCMP press release.
The suspect, 32, appeared at Nanaimo provincial court Wednesday to face robbery charges.
