Vancouver Island hospital housekeepers and cooks have accepted a contract with their employer.
Hospital Employee’s Union members voted 62 per cent in favour of the new contract with Compass Group Ltd., the company contracted by the Vancouver Island Health Authority for cleaning and food services. The employees had rejected a previous proposal.
The four-year agreement is effective from Oct. 1, 2008 to Sept. 30, 2012 and includes an increase of wages from $13.05 per hour to $14.75 by 2012. It includes a wage increase of 30 cents per hour retroactive to June 1, 2009.
Contract highlights include casual employees working 20 or more hours per week getting 100 per cent employer paid benefits, dental and health benefit premiums increasing from 70 per cent to 100 per cent employer-paid and stronger contract language to address training, workloads and staffing.
The contract affects 80 housekeepers at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital and 1,000 housekeepers and food service workers across the Island.
