Bus service in several areas of Nanaimo is set to improve.

B.C. Transit is expanding service in September with improved connections for the No. 2 Hammond Bay to the Departure Bay ferry terminal, as well as an increase in service during statutory holidays.

In January, service will again expand as service frequency within the Fairview/Harewood area is raised to 30-minute service during peak hours.

A new express bus will also begin in September, running from Qualicum Beach to the Departure Bay ferry terminal, making select stops in Parksville, Woodgrove Centre and Brooks Landing. It will be introduced as a pilot run, enabling an evaluation of new regional connections in 2010.

“This expanded service will support the growing demands of our valued customers in the Regional District of Nanaimo and will allow B.C. Transit to improve the way we link communities, businesses and support lifestyles,” said Manuel Achadinha, president and CEO of B.C. Transit.

Expansions were deferred late-February to allow B.C. Transit to review its new budget and proposed service plans.

In the last fiscal year, B.C. Transit saw about a 6.5-per cent increase in transit users and served 46 million customers.

Last September, B.C. Transit implemented the largest one-time expansion in its history, adding over 160,000 additional hours of service in more than two dozen communities.
