Community police station on the move

Downtown Nanaimo has a new Community Policing and Services office.

Thursday morning movers packed up furniture and equipment from the old downtown office on Wharf Street and carried everything down to its new home at 18 Victoria Cres.

“We need a bigger location,” said Sharon Welch, community services coordinator for the city. “With all these [downtown] ambassadors and Footprints Security and everybody in here, we’re just too squished up.”

Like the old station, the new one will be headquarters and meeting place for the Nanaimo Downtown Ambassadors, security organizations and volunteer programs, while also serving as a branch office for Mounties working the downtown.

Gord Nixon, of the city’s bylaws department, said the bigger kitchen and meeting room will give staff the space to do more, such as plan meetings with larger groups, than they could previously.

“It can also serve as some place for police to conduct interviews,” he said.

The Victoria Crescent location is also more visible and accessible to the public.

The new office hosts its grand opening Wednesday (Oct. 15) 10:30 a.m. to noon.
