Inbrief City buses running through holidays

The Nanaimo Regional Transit System will provide statutory service on Thanksgiving Monday as well as regular weekend service today and Sunday.

The regional service says it recognizes the fact people still need to get around over the long weekend.

“Many people have to work on statutory holidays and we’re expanding our transit system to accommodate this,” said Larry McNabb, chairman of the Regional District of Nanaimo Transportation Committee. “We also want to keep transit in place for visitors and local residents seeing friends and relatives on Thanksgiving weekend.”

The transit service is marking its first year of statutory holiday service with buses running on eight of the 11 holidays in 2008.

The service is averaging 2,400 riders per holiday. Of those riders, half are students, 34 per cent are monthly pass holders and 16 per cent are seniors.
