Nanaimo Mounties have recovered two stolen safes. Now they are trying to track down the culprits who stole them.
The safes were taken during a break and enter early Monday at the Nanaimo Bottle Depot on Mostar Road, where thieves cut into the building through an exterior electrical room.
Once inside, they made off with two safes containing an undisclosed sum of money and other documents.
Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said nothing else was taken from the building.
Both safes were later found partially submerged in Hemer Lake in Cedar by parks maintenance employees.
Police are reviewing surveillance tapes from the bottle depot and forensic specialists are examining the safes for clues.
Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-245-2345 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
