AARON ADDISON

An all-terrain vehicle crash at a gravel pit off Nanaimo Lakes Road killed a 29-year-old Nanaimo man Saturday night.

Aaron Addison was killed around 7:30 p.m. when the ATV he was riding flipped and landed on him.

Friends called for help, but by the time paramedics arrived Addison had died from internal injuries.

“He was our youngest, we were very close,” said Walker Addison, Aaron’s father.

“I loved the guy. He was hard working, his friends loved him, his family loved him. He never complained, he was always smiling.”

Aaron Addison was planning to announce his recent engagement to his family Sunday as a gift for his mom for Mother’s Day. He was also preparing to celebrate his 30th birthday next week.

Instead, the close-knit family is preparing to bury the youngest of six children.

“He’s broken the chain,” said Walker Addison, while looking at photos of better times hanging on the family’s den wall.

Some are of Aaron driving logging trucks he was so proud of, others of him and his father on a hunting trip up island from last fall.

“The little guy was only about 130 pounds. Some people couldn’t believe he was able to operate trucks that big,” said Walker Addison. “He learned to drive them when he was just 19. I always worried about him and I didn’t want him working in the forest industry, but he was just so eager and happy.”

Aaron Addison had stopped riding his ATV, one of his favourite pastimes, at the gravel pit for awhile, but recently started going back with friends. He was an experienced rider both on ATVs and dirt bikes.

Police say no further investigation is expected.

“We’ll help with the coroner’s investigation but at this point it’s in the coroner’s hands,” said Const. Jen Allan of the Nanaimo RCMP.
