A little bit of rope can go a long way in educating a generation about heart-healthy living.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Jump Rope for Heart program is back, encouraging children to be active through skipping and motivating them to give back.
Last year in Nanaimo, parents, teachers and children helped raise more than $53,000 for life-saving research and programs that teach children healthy eating habits and the importance of physical activity.
The program runs from November to the beginning of June with students collecting pledges from family and friends.
Some schools hold the event for an entire day, with the classrooms rotating in the gym through stations while other schools have the students skip at the same time for a lunch period.
“When I visit schools that hold a Jump Rope for Heart event, students are skipping in the playground even weeks after their event,” said Jaime Spyksma, school programs coordinator.
