Trio rediscovers passion for piano

Three women found they had much in common when they met during piano lessons.
Sayuri Kubota, Fusako Constable and Chiaki Pidruchney emigrated to Canada from Tokyo, Japan, having taken piano lessons as children.
Constable first laid hands to the piano at age six, but gave it up after family and work occupied her life. One of her greatest wishes is that she was born with larger hands to she could play more of her favourite pieces.
Pidruchney’s enthusiasm for the piano was revived seven years ago when her son showed interest in the instrument. When she enrolled her son, she signed up, too.
Kubota planned to become a professional pianist but chose life as a mathematics teacher instead. Despite a busy life as a teacher and mother, she made time for piano lessons.
In Nanaimo, the women study under Teresa Marusarz-Borek, and will showcase what they’ve learned since taking up the piano again in a concert focused on dance music.
Mazurkas composed by Chopin and pieces from Brahms Hungarian Dances will be played along with the womens’ favourite solo pieces. The concert is set for Oct. 18, 7:30 p.m., at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Departure Bay Road. Admission is by donation, with proceeds going to the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music.
