Vancouver Island University believes in building strong ties to the community.
That’s why for the third year in a row, VIU is supporting the United Way Loaned Representative initiative.
Jenna Stephenson, VIU customer service representative, has been ‘loaned’ to United Way Central and Northern Vancouver Island to assist with it’s annual fundraising campaign until December.
This week, Stephenson will launch an official workplace campaign at the Nanaimo campus to encourage co-workers to support United Way member agencies.
“Last year, students, staff and faculty at VIU raised more than $15,000 for the United Way,” said Stephenson. “Every dollar raised stays right in the community, enabling local non-profit organizations to help citizens in need through a variety of programs and services. I’m optimistic this year’s campaign will be just as successful.”
While Stephenson’s main role is to support workplace fundraising efforts at VIU, she is also helping other local businesses conduct their own United Way campaigns.
“This year, we’re focusing on raising funds for the development of three areas in our local community including healthy children and youth, strengthening families, and engaging and supporting seniors,” said Stephenson. “In my role as a loaned representative, I’m learning more about community organizations on the Island that are supported by the United Way and what they do. It’s great to help connect VIU to these worthwhile groups.”
VIU’s workplace fundraising campaign continues to Nov. 20. Information tables will be set up in the Welcome Centre at the Nanaimo campus Monday and Tuesday (Nov. 9-10); the upper cafeteria Thursday and Friday (Nov. 12-13); and the lower cafeteria Nov. 16-17.
The public is invited to drop by between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. each day.
“There will also be an opportunity to donate and meet representatives from organizations funded by the United Way,” said Stephenson.
