Battle of Britain remembered

One of the world’s most famous air battles will be remembered Sunday (Sept. 20) at the Nanaimo Military Camp.
The 808 (Thunderbird) Wing Air Force Association of Canada is hosting a Battle of Britain commemoration, 11 a.m. at the camp’s armoury on Nanaimo Lakes Road.
The event will include a traditional drumhead service, honouring the air force personnel who fought off the German Luftwaffe in the skies over Britain early in the Second World War, preventing an invasion of England.
A drumhead service is a church service conducted “in the field,” often near the battlefront.
Lacking a church to attend, the military command used its drums, piled neatly and draped with flags or banners to create an altar.
All those attending the service are asked to be seated by 10:45 a.m.
