Dollar store helps with shoeboxes
Published: October 10, 2008 3:00 PMFor organizers of Operation Christmas Child, the greatest things really do come in small packages. Shoebox packages, that is.
This year, the program continues its effort to deliver shoeboxes filled with holiday cheer to children suffering from famine, war, disease and natural disaster.
The Great Canadian Dollar Store is once again partnering with Operation Christmas Child to help ensure those less fortunate have a happier Christmas. On their website, there are videos on the project and how to pack a shoebox to donate to the cause.
Operation Christmas Child targets specific countries and regions to canvass each year to find out exactly how many children there are and whether they are male or female.
Shoebox gifts are then sent out to those countries and are delivered by teams of pastors, charities and civic leaders.
All children only receive a shoebox gift once. For some, it is the only one they will get.
Last year about 3,500 shoeboxes were filled in the Nanaimo, Ladysmith and Parksville areas. This year’s goal is 4,000. The local campaign got underway Sept. 29.
