In the next few years, your mobile phone will be a trusted guide to shopping, banking, touring a new city, and more. Alon M. Kronenberg, a mobility expert for IBM, identifies three emerging mobile trends to look for:
u
Location Awareness – Mobile GPS applications have evolved from directing us from point A to B, to helping us find the nearest Starbucks, whether we are a block away from home or halfway across the country. Simply by indicating our current location, we will be able to access up-to-the-minute locations, traffic patterns and wait times. Want to know if a certain route is the best way downtown? Monitor the status of other drivers on the same route in real-time, and choose your path accordingly.
u
Relevant information delivered to you on-the-go – Want to get an update on what tomorrow’s gas price will be during your 6 p.m. commute home? Want to be notified any time a transaction above $100 is posted on your credit card bill? Want to get an update of your flight’s status an hour before it departs? With the availability of PUSH notifications in most mobile platforms coming online soon, you can expect to receive information on your phone just as you need it.
u
Unexpected uses – Today you can use the camera on your phone to take a picture of a book cover and then find retailers, reviews and pricing on the web. You can also use the built-in microphone to listen to a few seconds of a song and have the phone identify the title, artist and lyrics. In the future we will see even more fresh ideas and features, including video recorders and compasses. We will also see them used in incredibly innovative ways that will change forever our relationship with technology.
