Late in the second period the Lake Cowichan Midget Lakers were down 3-1 to Port Alberni in hockey action in Lake Cowichan on Sunday, but it could have been worse.
The home team’s play in the second period left a lot to be desired and a series of penalties didn’t help the cause.
The Lakers took the early lead on a goal by Cory Floyd, assisted by Nicholas Kolenberg, but three goals in the second period by Port Alberni, including the third one with just 33 seconds to go in the frame, seemed to give the visitors the clear edge.
Just nine seconds later, though, Floyd got his second goal of the game and that fired up the Lakers and the fans.
Jordan Anderson then scored just 32 seconds into the third period to tie the score, unassisted.
That set the stage for Jonny Watson’s heroics 5-1/2 minutes later when he scooted around a defender and fired a wrist shot over Port Alberni goalie Dan Gillis’s glove into the net for the winner.
Jordan Fraser and Jared McKee assisted on the play.
Although they didn’t score any more goals, the Lakers held the edge in play the rest of the way.
Lakers’ goalie Cheyne Schmegelsky did his part as well, especially late in the game when he stoned a Port Alberni player on a breakaway.
