Brett Parhar of Port Alberni sunk a par putt on the first playoff hole to beat Ken Osborne of Glacier Greens in Comox in this year’s Dawn Coe-Jones Junior Open at March Meadows Golf Club on Friday.
The two golfers were tied after 18 holes, each with a one-under 71.
Parhar said his game was very consistent, with his straight driving helping keep him out of trouble. He said he relied as much on irons off the tees as his driver.
“I made a couple of long putts, which really helped,” he said after his win.
Parhar admitted he was very nervous before the playoff hole, with most of his fellow golfers and fans standing around the first tee to watch. “My heart was pounding,” he said.
He didn’t show it, though, placing his tee shot about 15 feet below the hole on the 157-yard par 3 first hole. He two putted for the par
Osborne hit his tee shot about the same distance from the hole, but he was facing a downhill putt, which he hit about five feet too far, then missed his next putt.
Pieter de la Rey and Derek Reid each shot even par 72 to tie for third place, while Brayden Eriksen of Pheasant Glen Golf Resort in Qualicum Beach was fifth with a 73.
Defending champion Cameron Davison of Duncan Meadows Golf Course, who last year set a tournament record with a five-under 67, placed 10th with a score of 77.
On the girls’ side, Lauren Degoey of Uplands Golf Club in Victoria shot an 86 to win by eight strokes over Michelle McCann of Glacier Greens Golf Course in Comox.
Mark Valliere of Nanaimo shot a 76 to win the boys’ under 14 category, while Derek Pike from Port Alberni was second with an 82.
Cameron Davison of Duncan Meadows Golf Course in Duncan shot the tournament’s best net score, with a 66, one better than Cam Liptrot’s net 67.
Curtis St. Cyr of Cowichan Golf and Country Club and Jimmy Jones from March Meadows tied for third low net with 68s.
Dallas Jones of Mount Brenton Golf Course in Chemainus was closest to the pin on the first hole, with a shot that landed 20 inches from the hole. Nick Meade of Crown Isle Golf Club in Courtenay fired the KP on the seventh with a shot that was seven feet 11 inches from the hole.
Coe-Jones played 25 years on the LPGA tour before retiring at the end of last season. She won three tournaments in her career: the Women’s Kemper Open in 1992, the Healthsouth Palm Beach Classic in 1994 and the Chrysler-Plymouth Tournament of Champions in 1995.
