Duncan golfer wins Dawn Coe-Jones junior tournament in one-hole playoff

Fourteen-year-old Cameron Davison stood on the 147-yard first hole at March Meadows Golf Club on Thursday, a crowd of about 50 people watching, as he hit his tee shot about seven feet from the pin.

Davison, who golfs out of Duncan Meadows Golf Course, then dropped the birdie putt to win a playoff against 18-year-old Riley Wheeldon of Crown Isle Golf Club in Courtenay.

The two golfers had tied for first after 18 holes of the Dawn Coe-Jones Amateur Junior Open, each firing tournament record five-under par 67s.

"It's probably the best round I've ever played," said Davison. "My putter was working really well. All parts of my game were good."

Davison scorched the front nine with a four-under 32 and cruised home with a one-under 35.

Davison won last year's 14 and under trophy at the tournament, carding a 77.

Wheeldon, who has an impressive amateur record, including a win at the CN Future Links Pacific Championship earlier this year at his home course, went out in 34 and stormed home with a 33.

For tournament host Dawn Coe-Jones, who learned to golf at March Meadows and has played 25 years on the LPGA tour, it was impressive.

"I don't think I've ever shot a 67 at March Meadows," she said. "Thanks for the playoff, guys. That was fun."

On the girls' side, 14-year-old Kesley Jahnke of Pheasant Glen Golf Club at Qualicum Beach scored an 83 for an easy 12-stroke victory over Kelsey Yamasaki, 14, of Nanaimo.

"My game wasn't that good," said Jahnke. "My irons and my driver were okay."

Greg Palmer of the Alberni Golf Club fired a 76 to win the boys' 13-14 age category, while Brayden Eriksen of Pheasant Glen was second with a 78.

Logan Yanick of Crown Isle won the boys' 12 and under category with an 84, while Steen Cooper of Cowichan Country Club was second with a 94.

Evan Scotney of the Victoria Golf Club in Victoria scored the boys' low net with a 66, while Jimmy Jones Junior of March Meadows, son of Dawn Coe-Jones and Jimmy Jones, was fifth low net with a 67.

"I think he's got it backward," said his dad. "He plays hockey in Florida and golfs in Canada."

Chris Carpentier of Honeymoon Bay scored a low net 69 in the boys' 13-14 category.
