West Sahtlam, Youbou-Meade Cr. not interested in restructuring
EDITOR:: Reading the recent article, Reorganization of government at lake takes a subregional twist, in the October 28 Gazette, I can certainly agree that several things have become twisted.
First, the facts are that neither the west Sahtlam community, a part of Area F, or the Youbou Meade/Creek, Area I, are much interested in what the local restructure committee is proposing.
Politically Area I has said, “No thanks at this time,” and has broadly said so in the past; as well, West Sahtlam is not interested in a future as a Lake Cowichan appendage. Culturally they are part of Sahtlam.
That said, a governance study has been completed in south Cowichan and they are now going to the next steps in an incorporation study — perhaps, maybe, there will be a municipality including Mill Bay, the Malahat, Shawnigan Lake and Cobble Hill that emerges.
At Cowichan Lake there already is a municipality, the Town of Lake Cowichan; you’re already miles ahead of the south end and if communities such as Mesachie Lake and Honeymoon Bay feel hard done by and unhappy under the umbrella of the Cowichan Valley Regional District, simply ask for a boundary adjustment with the town and you will be free of the CVRD quickly and in a municipality before you know what hit you…go for it!
