Vaccinations for the H1N1 flu are available at the Kaatza Health Unit, 58 Cowichan Ave. W., in Lake Cowichan over the next two weeks.
“They’re offering this to everyone,” said Carolyn Yablonski, public health nurse.
Here are the dates and times of the drop-in vaccinations.
October 26, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
October 28, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
November 2, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
November 4, 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
The Vancouver Island Health Authority says that for most children the symptoms of the H1N1 flu virus are similar to the symptoms of seasonal influenza, however, in some people the infection can be more serious.
This includes those children and adults with the following chronic health conditions:
• Cardiac or pulmonary disorders such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia, COPD, cystic fibrosis and asthma.
• Diabetes mellitus and other metabolic diseases.
• Cancer, immunodeficiency or immunosuppression.
• Renal disease.
• Anemia or hemoglobinopathy.
• Healthy children under the age of two.
• Healthy pregnant women.
VIHA advises parents that if their children are in any of the above categories to discuss the vaccination with their family doctor.
“Please also note that children who have influenza like illness should not attend school until their symptoms and fever have fully resolved and they are well enough to fully participate in school activities,” said Fred Rockwell, medical health officer in Nanaimo.
