The Ladysmith-Chemainus Swim Club clocked some fast times in the pool at the first big meet of the season.
Twelve Orcas competed at the Nanaimo Riptides Swim Team Fall Invitational on Oct. 24-25 in Nanaimo.
The Ladysmith-Chemainus group came away with three club records and two qualifying times for provincial and national meets.
Dusan Toth-Szabo, Orcas coach, said the results were a surprise after only six weeks of training.
“It actually went better than I thought it was going to go. We had lots of best times,” he said.
The club records came from Kara DeClark in the 50-metre freestyle race, Maria De Leeuw in the 50-m breaststroke and Lauren Smythies in the 50-m breaststroke.
De Leeuw also qualified for a AA provincial competition with her 100-m breaststroke time. Meanwhile, Cody Short had a 200-m breaststroke time that qualified him for age-group nationals next year.
“So far it looks like everything is working nice,” Toth-Szabo said.
The Orcas have planned to attend three more big competitions before the end of the year. A meet in Victoria was planned for last weekend. Results were not available at press time. There is also a meet later this month in Duncan and then another in December in Victoria.
