Ladysmith Secondary School’s senior girls volleyball team is eyeing a spot in the provincial playoffs.

With the regular season almost finished, the group of nine players in Grades 10 to 12 is preparing for a Vancouver Island-wide tournament later this month.

Coach Laura Mazurenko said the season has gone well so far for the AA squad. Six players have returned from last year’s team, which placed fifth in the 2008 Island playoffs.

“They’re really starting to jell as a team. Unfortunately we’re coming up to the playoffs and two of my starters won’t be there for the Islands,” Mazurenko said.

Shawnigan Lake School hosts the Island-wide tournament Nov. 20-21.

Mazurenko said her team expects tough competition from Brentwood College School, Lambrick Park Secondary School and Woodlands Secondary School. She said the hope is to place third and earn a wildcard rating. That would lead to a match against a mainland team to qualify for a spot in the provincials.

“That’s what we’re striving for. The girls are working hard.”

Mazurenko praised the players for their level of commitment. They held weekly practices through the summer.

“I just think this is probably one of the strongest teams Ladysmith has seen. We’re traditionally not a volleyball school.”

But the season hasn’t been all hard work. The seniors girls travelled to Honolulu in October to play in two tournaments against teams from the United States and Western Canada.

“The girls were great ambassadors. They were so well behaved and good role models,” Mazurenko said.
