Web Extra: Football season arrives

The fall football season is just about ready to kick off.
The Cowichan Valley Football Association is geared up for another successful campaign, with four teams entered in the Vancouver Mainland Football League.
Despite absences for summer holidays, Cowichan Junior Bantam Bulldogs’ coach Jeff McDonald is impressed with the talent he has assembled.
“They’re looking lean, mean and in good shape,’’ said McDonald.
He’s had 32 players out to practices so far.
“Our prospects look great,’’ said McDonald. “We’re not overly big, but we’re fast.’’
Blake Weston is coaching the Peewee Bulldogs, Doug Williams the bantams and John Hugi the midgets.
A round robin tournament in Nanaimo this weekend will get teams into the swing of things.
“It’s like a shotgun thing, a controlled scrimmage,’’ said McDonald.
A full slate of exhibition games involving teams in all four divisions will take place at McAdam Park Aug. 30. The junior bantams will be playing Nanaimo while the other three squads go against Richmond.
VMFL regular season action starts on the Labour Day weekend.
