The central island’s top doc is prescribing everyone get shots for both swine (H1N1) and seasonal flu, particularly folks in high-risk groups.
Dr. Lorna Medd cleared smoke clouding facts about injections at Cowichan clinics to prevent getting and spreading both bugs.
“Nurses in valley clinics will triage people coming in as to whether they should get one or both shots.”
Still, Medd understands the confusion.
“I can’t ignore people who are worried about the information but I’m satisfied the science is solid.
“For all the anguish, we have a good vaccine, a plan in place, effective treatment — Tamiflu — and good response from the public.”
For folks on the flu-shot fence, she warned, “even mild flu is not pleasant.
“My personal choice is to roll up my sleeve for both shots.”
Injections against H1N1 swine flu began
Monday for Cowichanians in the high-risk slot.
Those groups include people under 65 years old with chronic health conditions (e.g. asthma, diabetes), pregnant women, and Natives living in rural and isolated communities.
